Maintaining proper filtration is a two-step process?
 

Making sure you have a clean filter and your pump is running long enough to turn over the water at least once a day. 

 

Filters require cleaning every six months at minimum, but it is also possible to have a filter that is too small for a given body of water. In that case the cleaning of the filter will be necessary more often, in some cases once a month.
